Jordan Centre previously known as De-Addiction –cum-Rehabilitation Centre was established on 30.03.1990 under the Health & Family Welfare Department, Govt. of Mizoram for the treatment of victims of Drug abuse and alcoholism. The Centre was handed over to the Social Welfare Department in 1993 and was functioning at District Jail, Armed Veng, Aizawl Mizoram. The centre provided relentless help and support to the victims of drug abuse.
Later a well established Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts was started at Sethawn, Kolasib District on the land donated by Pu.H.Lianngura. After 2004-05 more focus was laid on the after care services for recovering addicts and hence the name was changed to “After Care Centre”. Capacity building programmes and training programmes have been provided by the centre which have produced fruitful results.
During 2019-20, taking cognizance of the burning need for the comprehensive drug treatment services which include detoxification, rehabilitation and after care services in Mizoram, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram spearheaded the move to re-establish Jordan Centre to provide services to the drug users leading to the Whole Person Recovery. In the past, the accommodation capacity was 75 males whereas the present strength is to be 150 (male and female) inmates which is further intended to increase to 1000 inmates.
In order to fulfil this vision, during the Financial Year 2019-20 the Government of Mizoram allocated funds amounting to Rs.920.27 lakhs from SEDP fund and further, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment through the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) also released sanction amounting to Rs.773.16 lakhs as first instalment for the up-gradation of the Jordan Centre.
